Sound waves absorption ensures better acoustics
Ever wondered why churches or gymnasiums echo when you clap your hands? It’s because of sound waves that bounce back into space when they hit the walls.
Absorbers are the most important acoustic treatment element because they absorb these sound waves, preventing them from being reflected. Listen to music or watch a film in an acoustically well-treated room just once and you will never want anything else.
Woody Queen is an incredibly effective handcrafted absorber whose design ensures acoustic comfort as well as a classy look. Just hang a few of these panels on the walls of your room. What you’re going to get is a considerably shorter decay time, translating into a more immersive and pleasant listening experience.
Many people think acoustic treatment only makes sense if you’re an audiophile or professional musician. In fact, great acoustics improve well-being, reduce stress, and aid communication. This translates into everyday activities such as playing with children and chatting with friends being much more enjoyable.
Here’s how absorption works.
The rule of thumb is that the deeper the absorber, the higher the effectiveness of absorption of lower frequencies of sound. That’s why a standard depth of 10-15 cm is usually recommended in music studios.
That being said, if you want to retain the liveliness of sound and primarily absorb mid and high frequencies, a depth of 5 cm is usually sufficient. This is typically preferred in home theatres and Hi-Fi listening rooms.
Woody Queen (depth of 5 cm): perfect for a home theatre, listening room, living room, home office, etc.
Woody Queen (depth of 10 or 15 cm): excellent for a home studio and professional music spaces
Acoustics is not rocket science, but there are a few principles you need to follow to maximize sound absorption. For example, placing an absorber on a side wall will have a different result compared to installing it on the ceiling. FAQ
Can you make me absorber in different colors or sizes?
We always go the extra mile to ensure our acoustic solutions suit the specific needs of our clients. Send us a description of what you’re looking for including the required design and dimensions. We will do our best to come up with the best possible solution.
How many absorbers do I need in my studio or at home?
In a good music studio or rehearsal room, acoustic panels need to cover at least 50 % of the wall area, with absorbers playing the major part. In a home listening room or home theatre, they should occupy at least 20 % of the wall area while large commercial spaces such as offices and restaurants typically require a tailor-made solution.
Where do I place the absorbing panels?
The very first thing to do is cover the first reflection points on the walls between the source of sound and the listening position. That way you eliminate early reflections. If you don't do this, the sound waves will bounce off the walls and interfere with the direct waves from the speakers, resulting in a sound that’s not clear and balanced. Check out our acoustic guide to find out more.
Does this absorber work like the foam tiles/pyramids?
Our Woody absorbers work more effectively compared to conventional foam tiles and pyramids. That’s because we use PET felt (recycled plastic), which boasts greater effectiveness at low frequencies (below 1 kHz), resulting in more sound energy being absorbed. Furthermore, foam pyramids usually fail to contribute to a reflection-free zone at the listening position.
That said, pyramids do a decent job at high frequencies as well as while preventing flutter echoes. So if you insist, use them on parallel untreated walls to complement your Woody Kid absorbers.
I think my room sounds quite well. Do I need acoustic treatment in the first place?
Listen to music in an acoustically treated room just once, and you will never want anything else. The clarity of sound and lack of any colouration is sure to blow your mind.
That said, acoustic treatment offers a range of benefits even if you hardly ever listen to music.
Acoustic panels improve the soundscape and facilitate communication in residential as well as commercial spaces because they absorb unwanted echoes and noise (people talking, phones ringing, electronic equipment humming, chairs scraping). This in turn translates into a reduction of stress, improvement of productivity, and increased well-being and ability to learn.
In short, proper acoustic treatment will make your life better in ways you never even imagined.
