the acoustics of music studios and rehearsal rooms
Whether it is a home or professional music studio, rehearsal room or listening room, the acoustics of the space must always be taken into account to achieve quality sound. Like musical instruments, it is necessary to consider the acoustics of the room as another member of the musical ensemble, which becomes indelibly part of music and recording. The acoustics of space must play with you, not against you.
Control the sound
In order to achieve the quality sound in the room, it is necessary to adjust the room acoustically. But why is that really the case? And would it be enough to tile the walls with legendary paper egg trays?
Sound waves in the room bounce back from the walls into space, causing a distortion of what we hear. The phenomenon of reflected sound waves is called reverberation, which is the same as an echo in nature.
Our auditory organs, thanks to these sound reflections, may perceive space and its size. But in the case of recording or listening rooms, it is inappropriate for the aftermath to overinfluence the pure sound that comes from instruments. At the same time, some frequencies may cause reflected waves to increase or decrease the volume of a given frequency, which is undesirable if music is recorded or mixed.
Absorption & Diffusion
In the case of an acoustic solution of a music studio, etc., we want to control the reflected sound in space, so we work not only with the reflection of sound but also with its absorption and diffusion.
The used absorbent materials can absorb the sound and do not let it reflect, while the so-called diffusers can fill the space with scattered sound waves without unwanted linear reflections from the untreated walls.
However, our goal is not to completely get rid of the reflected sound waves in the room. We want to keep a reasonable amount of reverberation here so that the sound leads to great mixes and so the room keeps its liveliness. For this reason, it is best to place not only Woody acoustic absorbers in the room but also a wooden acoustic diffuser that, thanks to its rugged design, evenly scatters the sound waves across the room. This duo would not replace even the largest amount of trays from eggs, which are too thin for any functional application and cannot effectively absorb or disperse sound waves.
What is the recipe?
The path leading to the best sound is not always the same. Usually, the individual acoustic solutions must be approached uniquely, tailor-made. You can do it yourself with our guide by following the basic principles of acoustic treatment or you can leave it to us.
