How to soundproof a room

Acoustic insulation material is designed to absorb sound, but you will need to combine it with a few other techniques to achieve great soundproofing effectiveness.
Remember, the more mass you put up, the better the soundproofing. That’s why it’s recommended to use drywall because it’s got the best price/effectiveness ratio. If you use denser materials than drywall, it will work even better, but then you’ll need to spend much more money on the construction.
First step: Drywall framing and decoupling
For great sound insulation for walls, you have to start with wall framing. In order to achieve truly functional insulation, the best solution is to put up double drywalls with a cavity between them. If you are looking to soundproof a wall that is already standing, then making a new layer of drywall in front of it is a way to go.
Are you wondering how deep the cavity behind the wall should be? The answer is simple, the deeper it is, the better it will perform the function of acoustic insulation. However, in normal domestic conditions, 20 cm is really great.
Decoupling is really important because of the vibrations. By decoupling the construction, you prevent the vibration from simply propagating further and you get rid of the noise transfer. Make sure you use insulation clips, resilient channels, or similar drywall fasteners, that are made specifically to reduce the propagation of vibrations in the construction.
Second step: adding an insulation
As such, the wall does not dampen the sound completely, but in combination with our Envizol, it will work very well. You should be able to fill the cavity with at least 10 - 15 centimeters of material for great effectiveness. However, leave there a bit of free space. Ideally, if you have a 15 cm cavity, place there a 10 cm insulation and leave 5 cm of free space. The air gap actually helps a bit with effectiveness.
